1. The graphs of \(y = p(x)\) are given in Fig. 2.10 below, for some polynomials \(p(x)\). Find the number of zeroes of \(p(x)\) in each case.
Fig 2.10 Graphs
Fig. 2.10

Solution:
Rule: The number of zeroes of a polynomial \(p(x)\) is the number of points where the graph intersects or touches the x-axis.
(i): The graph is a horizontal line parallel to the x-axis. It does not intersect the x-axis.
Number of zeroes = 0
(ii): The graph intersects the x-axis at only one point.
Number of zeroes = 1
(iii): The graph intersects the x-axis at three points.
Number of zeroes = 3
(iv): The graph (parabola) intersects the x-axis at two points.
Number of zeroes = 2
(v): The graph intersects the x-axis at four points.
Number of zeroes = 4
(vi): The graph touches/intersects the x-axis at three points.
Number of zeroes = 3

📚 Chapter 2: Polynomials – Quick Concept

In Exercise 2.1, you mainly learn:

What is a polynomial

Degree of a polynomial

Types of polynomials (linear, quadratic, cubic)

Finding number of zeroes using graphs

✍️ Exercise 2.1 – Complete Solutions

🔹 Question 1: Identify the number of zeroes from graphs

👉 To solve these questions:

Count how many times the graph intersects the x-axis

Each intersection = one zero

📌 Example Explanation:

Graph cuts x-axis at 2 points → 2 zeroes

Graph touches x-axis once → 1 zero

No intersection → 0 zeroes

📊 Understanding Graphs of Polynomials

A polynomial can have:

0 zeroes (no intersection)

1 zero (touches or crosses once)

2 or more zeroes (multiple intersections)

🎯 Key Concept Formula

\text{Number of zeroes of a polynomial} = \text{Number of points where graph intersects the x-axis}

🧠 Important Exam Tips

Always check graph carefully

Practice factorization regularly

Don’t skip steps in answers

Revise definitions (very important)
